What we recycle

Recycling means re-using either the raw materials in a product or even the whole product as a whole.
With Britain's land fills filling up at an alarming rate, there is an ever greater need to find alternative means of getting rid of our unwanted products.more
Items that can be recycled

  • Metals:
All metals are recycled. Metals are processed separately. Once at the metal recycling plant, the metal is chipped into small pieces which are then melted in a furnace. When the metal has cooled slightly, it is rolled into large sheets which are then formed into new products.
  • Car batteries: The batteries are taken to specialist centres where the batteries are shredded and the acid is removed and disposed of in accordance with hazardous waste regulations. Excluding the acid, the rest of the battery can be recycled. The lead is melted and reused to manufacture more batteries. The polyethene plastic is melted down into tiny pallets which are used to manufacture plastic.
  • Cardboard: The cardboard is recycled through the pulping process. Inks and dyes are removed from the cardboard and water is added to produce a pulp-like material. This mixture is passed through large heavy rollers which remove excess water and press the cellulose fibres together, causing them to lock as they dry.
  • Paper: The paper is also recycled through the pulping process. Inks and dyes are removed from the paper and water is added to produce a pulp-like material. This mixture is passed through large heavy rollers which remove excess water and press the cellulose fibres together, causing them to lock as they dry.
  • Concrete & rubble: Any material suitable for recycling, such as concrete, flagstones and bricks are crushed and the rubble is then used as 'sub-base' material and foundations on construction sites.
  • Plastic bottles: The Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) plastics (those which have the number one on their base) are processed in Holland and recycled into fleeces and sleeping bags. The High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) plastics (those which have the number two on their base are recycled into things like fenceposts!

Why we recycle

Not ony do we believe in conducting our business in the most environmentally reponsible way that we can, it also makes complete financial sense to recycle as much as possible. Using landfills to dispose of waste and unwanted products is the most expense disposal option.

In contrast, separating waste into their recycleable components reduces the disposal costs dramatically.

Charity shops

Whenever possible, if we take great pleasure in giving good items of furniture and other goods to charity shops. Not only does this reduce our costs but it enables someone who can not afford to buy new the chance of owning something that they would like.
